Understanding detox

What Is Drug and Alcohol Detox?

Detox, short for detoxification, is the medically supervised process of clearing alcohol or other substances from your body while managing the withdrawal symptoms that follow. When someone who is physically dependent stops using, the body reacts, and a trained medical team uses monitoring and, when appropriate, medication to keep that process safe and as comfortable as possible.

In Massachusetts, detox is a licensed level of care, overseen by the state Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. It is important to understand what detox is and is not: it manages the physical side of dependence, but it is only the beginning. Lasting recovery comes from the treatment that follows, which is where New Wave comes in.

Safety first

Why Detox Should Always Be Medically Supervised

Please do not try to detox on your own. Withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines can be life-threatening. If you or someone you love is dependent on alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids, reach out and we will help you find safe, supervised care.

Detoxing alone at home can be dangerous, and in some cases life-threatening. Withdrawal from alcohol and from benzodiazepines can escalate quickly and may cause seizures or other serious complications, which is why medical supervision matters so much. A supervised setting means clinical staff can monitor your vital signs, ease symptoms with medication, and respond immediately if anything goes wrong.

Timelines

How Long Does Detox Take?

Every person is different, and timelines depend on the substance, how long and how heavily it was used, and your overall health. As a general guide, detox often takes about a week, though it varies. Opioid withdrawal typically peaks within a few days and eases over roughly 7 to 10 days. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be more medically serious and are closely monitored.

Your detox provider will give you a clear, personal picture during their assessment. Whatever the timeline, the goal is the same: get you safely stable so real recovery can begin.

The path forward

What Happens After Detox?

Detox clears the substance from your body, but it does not address the thoughts, habits, and underlying issues that drive addiction, which is exactly why continued care matters so much. After detox, you step into treatment with us. Most people begin in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) (Day Treatment) for structured daily support, then step down to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Relapse Prevention Program as they grow stronger.

Holistic care is woven in every day, and you keep the same private therapist throughout. Detox is the door; New Wave is the path that leads somewhere lasting. Explore all our programs

Does New Wave Recovery Center provide detox?

No. New Wave does not provide medical detox on site. We connect you with a trusted, licensed detox partner in Massachusetts, then welcome you back to begin outpatient treatment with us once you are medically stable.

Detoxing alone is not recommended and can be dangerous. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal in particular can be life-threatening. Detox should always happen under medical supervision.

It varies by substance and individual, but detox often takes about a week. Opioid withdrawal typically peaks within a few days and eases over about 7 to 10 days. Your detox provider will give you a personal timeline.

Cost depends on the provider and your insurance. Many plans, including MassHealth via WellSense, help cover medically necessary detox. Our team can help you understand your benefits and find an in-network detox partner.

Yes. From your first call, we help arrange the right detox setting with a trusted partner, stay in touch during your stay, and hold your place so the transition into our programs is seamless.

Alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids commonly require medically supervised detox. A professional assessment is the best way to know what level of care you need, and we can help arrange one.

Not at all. You can engage with these ideas spiritually or simply as a mindset and emotional-regulation practice. Either way, the goal is the same: reconnecting with your wholeness.
