Recovery Yoga
Yoga reconnects the mind and body through gentle movement, breath, and stillness. As part of yoga for mental health and addiction in Massachusetts, it helps people in recovery release tension, manage cravings, and feel at home in their bodies again.
What Is Recovery Yoga?
Recovery yoga is a gentle, trauma-informed form of yoga adapted for people healing from addiction and mental health struggles. It combines simple movement, breathing, and mindfulness, with no experience or flexibility required. The goal is not a perfect pose; it is reconnecting with your body in a safe, supported way.
At New Wave, yoga is part of our daily holistic programming in Massachusetts. It works alongside clinical therapy, giving the lessons of recovery a place to live in the body, not just the mind.
Who Recovery Yoga Is For
You do not need to be flexible or experienced. Yoga is especially helpful if you:
- Feel disconnected from or uncomfortable in your body
- Carry stress, tension, or restlessness
- Are managing anxiety, depression, or trauma
- Want a healthy outlet for difficult energy and emotion
- Struggle with sleep or a racing mind
- Are looking for a drug-free way to feel calm and strong
How Yoga Helps Mental Health and Addiction
Research increasingly supports yoga as a complement to treatment for both substance use and mental health conditions.
For addiction, yoga teaches you to notice sensations and urges without immediately reacting, the same skill that helps you ride out a craving. It also offers a healthy way to release the restless energy and stress of early recovery, and a drug-free source of the calm and clarity people are often chasing.
For mental health, the breath and movement of yoga calm the nervous system, easing anxiety and lifting mood. For those healing from trauma, trauma-informed yoga gently rebuilds a sense of safety and ownership in the body, which talk therapy alone cannot always reach.
Our recovery yoga sessions include:
Gentle, accessible movement for all bodies and abilities
Breathwork to calm the nervous system
Mindfulness woven through the practice
Trauma-informed guidance with no forced poses
A focus on noticing, not performing
Stillness and rest to close each session
Yoga complements our other holistic practices like mindfulness and meditation, and reinforces the coping skills taught in DBT and other evidence-based therapy.
